Bonnie is a true Blueberry lover. She just can't get enough of those oxidant-rich, health packed blueberries! Follow Bonnie on her quest to find the perfect Blueberry in this two-day itinerary. She knows that every farm is different so each blueberry crop may vary slightly. Which farm has the sweetest and juiciest?
On Day One Bonnie explores a number of local Brooksville farms to pick fresh blueberries, and enjoys a special treat at the end of the day. Here are Bonnie’s blueberry picking tips:
What you will need:
- close-toed shoes
- insect repellent
Start in the late morning to avoid dew. To pick berries, gently rake your fingers through the branch with a bucket/container positioned beneath to catch the falling berries. This works better than shaking bushes, which can lead to more berries falling to the ground than into your bucket.
After picking, canning or freezing your blueberries can preserve them for more than just the season. Planning to cook? For blueberry recipes, visit http://www.freshfromflorida.com/Recipes/ and search ‘Blueberry,’ or visit http://blueberriesfromflorida.com/recipes/
Don’t forget to visit Historic Brooksville in April for the Florida Blueberry Festival! If you’re like Bonnie, you’ll have a blast trying all things blueberry, and enjoying the variety of artisans, vendors and music during the festival.
