You Are the Star; The Outdoors Is Your Stage

June is all about celebrating outdoor recreation and nature. Not only is it National Great Outdoors Month, it also includes National Trails Day, National Fishing & Boating Week and Free Fishing Days

Discover something new or revisit your outdoor fun favorites. With 107,000 acres of park and conservation lands, waterways and spectacular Gulf of Mexico coastline, Nature’s Place to Play delivers plenty of outdoors to explore.

The Forest

The World Wildlife Fund called the Withlacoochee State Forest “One of the 10 Coolest Places in North America You’ve Never Seen.”

This state forest takes its name from the meandering Withlacoochee River, flowing north for 13 miles through the forest. At 157,479 acres, the Withlacoochee is the second-largest forest in the sunshine state. Florida’s Adventure Coast is home to its vibrant Croom and Richloam Tracts. Learn about all facets of forest recreation in the In a Nutshell brochure, by calling 352-797-4140 or dropping by the Withlacoochee State Forest Visitor Services Center at 15003 Broad Street, Brooksville, 34601.

Trails

June 3 is National Trails Day. From The American Hiking Society, it's a day devoted to uniting all muscle-powered trail activities with the goal of connecting more people to trails. Every trail beckons adventure and has a story to share with any person willing to discover it, and the American Hiking Society believes these trail experiences can improve the lives of every American. Find your nearby Adventure Coast trail.

Hiking, paddling, horseback riding, off-road cycling and ATV-ing are just a few trail adventures for you to pursue on Trails Day (the 3rd), Get Outdoors Day (the 10th), Great Outdoors Month, or anytime. Visit day-use areas or sleep under the stars at a campsite.

The Water

Florida’s Adventure Coast boasts rivers, lakes, estuaries and open water, perfect for enjoying Great Outdoors Month.

Fish

June 3 and 4 are license-free saltwater fishing days and June 10 and 11 are license-free freshwater fishing days in Florida. In conjunction with National Fishing and Boating Week (June 3 – 11), these are days when anglers can fish on public bodies of water without a fishing license.

Boating and fishing are fun, stress-relieving activities that you can enjoy with family and friends anytime.

Participation in fishing and boating actually helps fund efforts to conserve our natural waterways. A portion of all fishing tackle and license sales, as well as boat supply and registration sales, fund the conservation and preservation of our nation's waterways through a program called the Sport Fish Restoration Program. This means that every time you purchase a fishing license or register a boat, you are helping improve the natural places you love.

Boat

Cruise your own or a rental to see our Florida’s Adventure Coast area of the Gulf of Mexico by boat. Discover clear, shallow water over seagrass and a sandy, rocky sea floor. Explore scenic coves and bayous or head out the channel to open water. At 250,000 acres, our sprawling seagrass meadows are some of the largest in North America, healthy habitat to many species.
